Some common rehabilitation terminology

Condition (illness, injury, congenital) e.g. Stroke

Impairment - this is what is what is not working in your body e.g. Left sided weakness

Functional Limitation (previously called disability) and is what you have difficulty doing in your own home because of your impairment. eg difficulty walking or poor balance, or difficulty showering or dressing.

Participation Restriction (previously called Handicap), this is what you find challenging outside your home e.g. difficulty with community access, driving, return to work or hobbies, shopping etc.

Because we are all individuals, the same disease process and impairment can affect one individual far more than another. The classic example is the loss of a little finger to a concert violinist, may render them unable to work, where as the same loss to a lecturer would not affect their work to the same degree.

Similarly all Rehab programmes are tailored to an indvidual. It is important not to compare yourself and your progress to others.

Common conditions managed by rehabilitation physicians include

  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • General debility after hospitalisation
  • Fractures
  • Elective joint replacements
  • Frequent falls
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinsons Disease
  • Degenerative neurological conditions, such as motor neuron disease and multi systems atrophy
  • Chronic pain

How do I know if I need outpatient, inpatient or day rehabilitation services?

Generally Dr Beiers will help determine which programme best suits your needs.

Inpatient programmes are usually offered to people who are early on in the course of their illness or injury and may be transferred directly from another hospital. They generally require nursing or medical care throughout the day. Inpatient admissions are also offered to people who are unable to access outpatient services, due to either their physical disabilities or geographical isolation.

Day Rehabilitation Programmes: These programmes are designed for people who are more independent and are back at home. They are funded by your private health insurer, and are considered part of your hospital cover (not ancillaries) and are for conditions requiring a multidisciplinary approach. You must require 2 therapies to attend.

Outpatient Services: This is best suited to the most independent people, who may have an impairment requiring only one discipline of therapy - e.g. physiotherapy. This is also suited to clients under the NDIS who may have home based therapy.
